Today we had our last lesson of Unit 3: Multiplication and Division. Tomorrow and Friday we will be reviewing the concepts covered in this unit. Students may be asked to bring home and completed unfinished review work in preparation for our upcoming unit test on Monday. In Science we continued to explore electricity, reviewing the safety precautions that we can take to make sure that we are using electrical devices safely within our homes (and in our classroom). Today we connected the two terminals of a D-cell battery. Many students were expecting to be "shocked." However, as we learned today, a D-cell battery does not produce enough electricity to harm you. Instead, we feel the heat generated as the electrons move through the wire. The flow of electrons will cause friction with the materials in the wire, especially if there is no device (load) to provide resistance. The electrons flow sufficiently to heat the wires and if we are not careful to disconnect these "hot wires" we can even drain the battery of energy! Today we continued to review problem solving in Math. We are currently working on multi-step problems. Some of these problems involve solving one operation and then using that information to use another operation to solve the problem. For example: Jill earned $513 babysitting and doing chores last year. She earns $5 an hour when she babysits. Jill babysat for 34 hours last year. How much money did Jill earn doing chores? 34 x 5 = 170 513 - 170 = 343 Jill earned $343 doing chores last year. Students are encouraged to practice multiplication and division every night this week! There is unit test for Unit 3: Multiplication and Division on Monday, January 14th. In Science today, we began our study of Electricity. Students began by learning about some of the safety issues to be careful of when working with or studying electricity. You can view any of the videos that we used today on the Grade 5 Science -- Electricity page. Today we also completed a cloze reading passage on Charles Dickens. Before the break, students had been listening to, "A Christmas Carol" in their Music classes. Today, we continued by taking time to make inferences to complete a reading passage on Charles Dickens and then to answer some reading comprehension questions about the author.
