Good afternoon, A few quick updates on events and activities taking place at school. First, as discussed at our Three-Way Conferences, students have access to both Mathletics and Reading Eggs so that they can continue to practice their skills at home. Mathletics (https://www.mathletics.com/ca/) is a web-based learning program that allows students to work at their own pace; anywhere, anytime. Mathletics is designed to help reinforce classroom learning through exciting challenges, lessons, and games. Students can also be assigned tasks based on their areas of need or strength, to further differentiate their Math instruction. Reading Eggs (https://readingeggs.com/) supports student learning by offering individual, one-on-one lessons that allow students to progress at their own rate, gradually building their reading confidence. Reading Eggs focuses on five key elements: phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency. Students are encouraged to use both of these resources at home. Student usernames and passwords can be found at the front of the student agenda. The usernames and passwords are the same for both websites. If your student has lost their username and password, please let me know and I will retrieve it for you. Second, this Friday, November 15th, is the Fort McMurray School Division's Rock Your Mocs event. This event encourages students and families to unite together to honour indigenous history, culture, and traditions by wearing moccasins or turquoise. Students will also be learning about and completing some artwork in class on this date. Our Indigenous Student Leadership Team has also completed a display on the history and culture of the Métis people in Alberta, as part of Métis Week. If visiting the school, please sign in at the office and come and see their hard work on display. Third, this upcoming Friday, November 15th, will be a Fri-Yay Popcorn Day. Students are welcome to purchase a bag of popcorn ($2 each) in support of Fundraising Association initiatives such as purchasing literacy resources (books), etc. that benefit the entire school. Finally, next Tuesday, November 19th, will be our annual Family Science Night. APEGA (the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta) and Christina Gordon Public School will be hosting an Elementary Science Night this upcoming Tuesday, November 19th from 6:00-9:00 pm at Christina Gordon Public School. Join us for an evening of fun, hands-on science and engineering activities and demonstrations as well as building, exploring, and literacy stations. Use your five senses at our APPLE Schools taste testing centre to be entered to win a prize! Get to know our CG Cares team and learn more about their Salvation Army Angel Tree initiative. There is no cost to participate and all are welcome to attend. We hope to see you there! As always, please let me know if there are any questions or concerns in regards to any of the above. Just a reminder that at Christina Gordon Public School we are committed to being a healthy school! As a proud APPLE School, we strive to promote healthy eating, an active lifestyle and positive well being in all we do! We follow provincial nutrition and physical activity guidelines as well as FMPSD’s District Administrative Procedure 164. As such, for our classroom celebration, we will have some snack options that help encourage the healthy habits we are striving to promote. As a class we are going to synergize to make (and eat) some healthy treats! We will be making some vegetable skeletons and some orange jack o'lanterns. Students can collaborate and work together to make their ghoulish delights and then enjoy their delicious creations. If you are able to supply an ingredient for the above, please add your name to the attached document (Snack/Ingredient Sign-Up Sheet) along with the ingredient that you will supply. Any items that parents are able to send pre-sliced or cut would be greatly appreciated. Families are in no way obligated to bring ingredients. I will provide whatever else is needed so that everyone can participate. Please remember that snacks that meet the provincial guidelines and adhere to the District Administrative Procedure we follow can be shared with classmates during organized class celebrations but those that do not, cannot be. As such, please do not send in any snack items that are outside of our guidelines or they will have to be returned home. Please remember we are a nut sensitive school. We will also be working together to create our own spooky obstacle courses for a fun, collaborative, daily physical activity break. Students are welcome to wear costumes to school, however, we will ask that students remove masks in the hallways or common areas for safety purposes. We also ask that families be mindful that costumes are appropriate for a K-6 school (ie. weapons, etc.). Our annual costume parade will be held at 10:00 am. Families are welcome to attend, just be sure to sign in at the front office. - Ashley Barrington, Grade 3 Teacher Agenda - Jr. Tech: Mondays, 3:15-4:15 pm - Sr. Choir: Tuesdays, 3:15-4:15 pm - Sign Language Club: Wednesdays, 3:15-4:15 pm - Hot Lunch Program: Tuesdays, Thursdays - United Way Spirit Week: Thursday, October 31st, Costume Day ($2 donation) - Family Halloween Dance: Wednesday, October 30th (5:30-7:00 pm) - Costume Parade: Thursday, October 31st (10:00 am) - Classroom Halloween Celebration: Thursday October 31st Sorry to not have posted consistently this week! Sometimes special events like Three-Way Conferences make it more difficult. I will do better next week. Please see the following email shared by Ms. Barrington in regards to the upcoming week: Good evening, Just a few updates a reminders about activities taking place next week, to help you plan and put first things first! First, as part of the Fort McMurray School Division's partnership with the United Way, Christina Gordon Public School has been given the opportunity to assist with raising money for our community. Next week we will be hosting a Spirit Week that will encourage students who dress up to bring in $2 donations on that day. Spirit Week will run from October 28-31st. The theme days are as follows:
Second, a reminder that our annual Halloween Family Dance will take place next week. Dress up and bring the entire family to the Halloween Dance happening on Wednesday, October 30th from 5:30-7:00 pm. We will be accepting monetary donations for our Healthy School Initiatives at the door. Glow sticks, water, and snacks will be on sale in support of our Grade 6 Edmonton Trip. Our Halloween Dance also features our annual family Pumpkin Carving Contest, so don't forget to bring along your already carved pumpkin for a chance to win! Students are encouraged to bring indoor shoes with them to reduce accidents while dancing on the gymnasium floor. We do ask that students attend with their family for supervision purposes. It's bound to be a spook-tacular event and ghoulishly good time! Finally, we will be having a small classroom celebration on Thursday, October 31st. First, students are bringing home their term one progress reports in the student agendas. These progress reports are not to be confused with the report cards. Report cards will go home at the end of each term. Term one report cards will go home in December. The progress report is a brief snapshot, meant to communicate areas of strength and areas of concern that students, teachers, and families can focus on throughout the year. Progress reports are meant to help you better know how your student is progressing towards these Grade 3 skills. Please note, the skills on the progress report are not expected to be mastered. Students have only been in school for a few weeks and behaviour, literacy, and numeracy are skills that we will work on continuously throughout the school year. This is just a source of information on what skills might need more practice. Please take a few minutes this evening to review the progress report with your student. Complete the questions at the bottom together as best you can and return the signed progress report in the student agendas tomorrow. We will be using them to guide our discussion at our upcoming three-way conferences. Second, students have been working very hard over the past few weeks. As a result we have met our October behavioural goal. Students have earned 30 points on our "Beat the Teacher" scoreboard. As such, tomorrow we will be having a classroom celebration to celebrate our success. Students have decided to have a Stuffed Animal Day. Students are invited to bring 1-2 stuffed animals to school. Students will be able to enjoy and share their stuffed animals throughout the day (ie. Soft Start, Classroom Meeting, etc.). During Independent Reading, students will be able to read to or read with their stuffed animals (practicing fluency). If students are unable to bring a stuffed animal of their own, there are extras that students will be able to borrow tomorrow. Third, a reminder that our three-way conferences begin tomorrow evening. Three-way conferences for Grades 1-6 students are scheduled for October 23rd and 24th. Parents/guardians should set up appointments online to meet with classroom teachers. Report cards for Grades 1-6 will be sent home at a later date (at the end of term 1 in early December). At Christina Gordon Public School we believe that early communication with parents/guardians and children to discuss the child's progress is vital, which is why these meetings are set up mid-term. In doing so, parents/guardians and students are able to have a discussion prior to the first term report card going home. This allows changes to be made where necessary to ensure the student's success. This is a more proactive approach than simply reacting to the report card. We believe there is much benefit in both the parent/guardian and student sitting down and having these discussions, which is why we have three-way conferences intended to involve all parents/guardians, students, and teachers, instead of a traditional parent-teacher interview. Please bring your student to these three-way conferences. While each conference is only 10 minutes long, with no grace period scheduled between scheduled appointments, please feel free to come early or stay after your scheduled appointment. There will be a number of activities and centres set up within the classroom so that students can lead their families through some of the features of our classroom and some of the activities we have been working on. To book an appointment for Grades 1-6 students, please go to the school website (http://christinagordon.fmpsdschools.ca/view.php?action=signin). If you have not already created an account, you will be asked to do so at that time. Please note, ECDP and Kindergarten three-way conferences will be held at a later date. Finally, the School Council is currently in need of two more executive members to work alongside our School Council chair, Alethea Austin. This is an important request that we are asking all families to consider. It is important that the School Council remains active and viable as it provides much needed parental input and advice to the school and school division administration. They are in need of the following:
