Welcome back everyone! Sorry there was no post for yesterday, I had a meeting downtown after Tech & Trades that I had to rush to get to.
Today students completed our review of Whole Numbers. Students who are interested in retaking their Whole Numbers test are going to be able to do so on Friday. Today students are bringing home a review sheet summarizing the concepts that we reviewed to help them study. They will also be getting back completed review sheets and their previous unit test tomorrow. Students are not required to retake this test and there is no risk to students if they do so. I will always accept the highest mark on student work!
In Language Arts today we added a new grammar concept to our study of the parts of speech - adverbs. Adverbs can be a little trickier to identify than nouns, verbs, and adjectives because they modify more than one thing. Adverbs can describe verbs, adjectives, or even other adverbs. Today we had an adverb hunt. Students practiced identifying adverbs by looking for words that end in -ly. The difficult part was identifying what verb the adverb was modifying. It is a little easier to identify adverbs that modify action verbs (eg. She ran quickly - the adverb is quickly, the verb is ran). However, identifying adverbs that modify a condition or state of being can be a little more difficult (eg. He was cuddly - the adverb is cuddly, the verb is was). We will continue working with adverbs in upcoming lessons. Remember, you can always review grammar concepts on the "Grammar" page under "Language Arts."
In Art today, students started an ongoing project on colour theory. Students are reviewing some concepts of colour that they may or may not have learned in previous years. We are doing this by colouring in a flower pot filled with flowers, each time using a different aspect of colour theory. Today students used primary colours, secondary colours, and tonal gradation. When we are done our review, students will have more freedom to choose a subject and medium of their choice for a final project.
Finally, I sent home a permission form today for an upcoming field trip opportunity for the Grade 5 and Grade 6 students at Christina Gordon Public School. Grade 5 and 6 students will be attending an Artist in Studio workshop on Thursday, March 23rd from 9:00-11:45 am at the Suncor Community Leisure Centre at MacDonald Island Park. This workshop will have students working with a local artist to create a piece of artwork. The activity will take two hours and all supplies will be provided. The artwork created by students will then be exhibited at the Art Gallery at the end of the school year so that it is able to be viewed by visiting community members. However, we do need to cover the cost of our own bussing in order to attend. To cover the cost of bussing, students will need to pay $5 each. I spoke to the students about this today. If there is a student/family member who is unable to pay $5 at this time, please do not hesitate to contact me so that we can work something out so that all students can take part in this exciting opportunity. Thank you so much.
