In Math today we started an ongoing Measurement project that Ms. Proudfoot has planned for us. We are going to be investigating who has the bigger playground, St. Anne's or Timberlea. Students are divided into three groups. Each group is measuring the perimeter and area of a playground (St. Anne's, Timberlea Division 2, Timberlea Division 1). Today most groups finished or almost finished measuring the perimeter of their playground. Many groups learned that metre sticks seemed to be the easiest tool to use as they are able to lie flat on the ground. Students marked off the distances they were measuring using sidewalk chalk. On Monday we will be outside again so that students can finish.
In Science today, we continued to explore dissolving. Earlier this week, we explored different solids (white powders) that would dissolve in water. Some dissolved easily (eg. citric acid) making solutions. Others would not dissolve even when stirred (eg. chalk dust, talc) making suspensions. Today students were considering how they could increase the speed with which a lifesaver dissolves. Students used a variety of manipulations to try and increase the rate that the lifesaver would dissolve:
- using hot water
- crushing the lifesaver
- using vinegar
- stirring the mixtures
Stirring increased the rate for all the mixtures. Hot water seemed to dissolve the lifesaver the best. Vinegar was also faster than regular water. Crushing the lifesaver depended on how fine the group was able to crush it. The smaller the pieces, the faster it dissolved. We will go over this experiment together again on Monday as a review before moving on.
We had wonderful weather for our Community Cleanup today. Thank you everyone for getting permission forms sent back to school so quickly.
