Please see the following email shared with families earlier this afternoon: Good afternoon, Just a few updates of events and activities taking place immediately following our Teacher's Convention Break. First, our second ski day will occur on Wednesday, March 6th. A few reminders about this trip. First, snowboarding will not be taught until Grade 6, unless students are experienced (level II or III) snowboarders with their own equipment. Lessons are mandatory for all students on ski days regardless of skill level or ability. We will leave school at 9:00 am and return by 3:00 pm. Students will need to bring their own bagged lunch or money to purchase lunch at the hill. Please note that students are strongly encouraged to bring their own bagged lunch. Students are given the same amount of time for lunch that they receive at school (20-30 mins); if there are long lines at the canteen, etc. it can be difficult for students to purchase and eat their entire lunch in the allotted time, and we don't want any students to risk going hungry. Especially when they are getting so much exercise. It is best to pack snacks to bring with us, and then students can use their own judgement as to whether or not they would like or are able to purchase food. Students bringing their own equipment for skiing or snowboarding, can bring it directly to the Christina Gordon entrance on the morning of March 6th, where transportation will be arranged. The school is not responsible for lost or damaged equipment. Students are reminded to dress for the weather (jacket, hat, mittens, snow pants). If skiing is cancelled due to weather, all attempts will be made to reschedule. If you are a parent chaperone for this trip, please send me a quick email confirming your attendance on March 6th. Second, a reminder about our upcoming classroom Science Fair. Science Fair logbooks were sent home on January 15th. Students are required to use these logbooks as a guide to conduct their experiments. The logbooks contain the steps needed for students to follow the scientific method, the rules, and the specific forms that are needed to be filled out depending on the topic of the Science Fair project. Students have been reminded on a daily basis to work on the project at their own pace, but to ensure that they have not left this project until the last minute. Our classroom Science Fair will take place on March 7th and our school Science Fair will be on March 12th. Students are assessed on their Science Fair projects, so please review the rubric located in the Science Fair logbook. Students have the choice to complete their projects on their own or with a partner. For further information and tips on the Regional Science Fair please see http://wbrsf.ca/links/. This resource provides students and parents with websites that they can use to help design, plan, organize, and present their projects. You can also visit our Classroom Website and click on the Science Fair link (under Grade 5 Science). Some students have asked for assistance in organizing their display boards. Attached is a suggested layout that students can reference; projects do not have to be organized in this manner. Finally, there was an error in the note sent home previously in regards to Painting Club. The following are the dates of the after school sessions for students who have brought in their permission forms to attend this club:

First, a reminder that FMPSD has changed its Administrative Procedures regarding temperatures for students to be outside. The temperature will now be below -24 degrees celsius (including windchill) instead of the previous below -20 degrees celsius (including windchill). With this change, students now take recess and lunch recess outdoors at -24 degrees celsius (including windchill). The same applies to before the first bell rings in the morning. When the temperature is below -24 degrees, doors will be open for students to come inside, otherwise students will remain outside until the first bell rings at 8:35 am. With this change, it is important that parents ensure that their children are dressed appropriately for the weather. If parents and families require assistance in acquiring winter clothing, etc. please do not hesitate to contact me. The school may be able to provide assistance in this regard. Second, Christina Gordon is very proud of our integration of technology in the classroom and our after-school programming that supports digital literacy and engineering. However, cell phone use by students is not permitted during school hours in the hallways or in the classrooms, unless specifically directed by a teacher for instructional purposes. Along with the potential for misuse, use of cellphones during the instructional day can be distracting and interfere with student learning. Students have access to Chromebooks and iPads, which are to be used to enhance students learning experiences. We understand that sometimes parents need to contact their child during the school day. In these situations, we ask that you call the office at (587) 276-2017 and we will happily pass on a message. If a child needs to call home, they are able to use the school phone either in the classroom or the office. We are sending this to all parents, fully realizing that this issue does not apply to everyone, especially younger children. We do believe that everyone should know the policies, procedures and practices that are put in place to provide the best and safest learning environment for your children. Third, we will be holding a Valentine's celebration in our class. Taking into account that not all students celebrate Valentine's Day, we have decided on some activities that all students can participate in. First, we will be having a movie day on Thursday, February 14th. Second, we will be watching "A Series of Unfortunate Events." This is also part of our Language Arts classes, as we will be comparing and contrasting it to "The Bad Beginning," "The Reptile Room," and "The Wide Window," which we have finished reading as part of our daily read aloud. Third, we will be making Community Fruit Salad. Students are welcome to bring in 1-2 pieces of their favourite fruit, pre-sliced if possible. Each student will have a bowl and a spoon and we will each be assembly our own fruit salad out of the different fruits that come to school on that day. I will also supply some yogurt that students can use as a sauce if they would like. If you are able to send 1-2 pieces of fruit, please indicate so on the attached sign-up sheet. Remember, students are not obligated to bring in anything. All students will be able to participate regardless of whether or not they were able to supply an ingredient. I will make sure that there are enough supplies that everyone can participate. Students are able to bring in Valentine's cards on February 14th. If they do, I do ask that students bring in a card for every student in the class. There are currently 28 students in our classroom. Thank you everyone, as always, please do not hesitate to let me know if you have questions or concerns in regards to any of the above, - Ashley Barrington, Grade 5 Teacher Agenda Weekly Homework: 5x and 10x Quiz Language Arts: - Read 20 minutes (track in your Agenda) - Spelling Quiz (Friday, Review w/ Spelling City) Math: - Pgs. 30-31 #1-10 (due tomorrow) - Patterns and Equations Unit Test (Wednesday, February 13th) Science: - Classroom Science Fair (March 7th) - School Science Fair (March 12th) Other: - Grades 5/6 Skiing (March 6th) - Energize Oil Country Parent Waiver (due ASAP) - Recorders (Payment due by February 15th) - Science Fair Boards ($7.00/Board) - Spirit Week: Wednesday, Scrabble Day (collecting granola bars) - Valentine's Family Dance (February 13th, 5:30-7:00 pm) - Classroom Celebration (February 14th) PEAK: Wednesday Tech & Trades Club - Mondays/Tuesdays, 3:15-4:15 pm Recycling Club - Day 3, 12:30-1:10 pm Grs. 5/6 Boys Basketball - Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3:15-4:15 pm Gr. 5/6 Girls Basketball - Mondays and Wednesday, 3:15-4:!5 pm Sharpen the Saw Club - Wednesdays, 3:15-4:!5 pm Broadcasting - Schedule Agenda Weekly Homework: 5x and 10x Quiz Language Arts: - Read 20 minutes (track in your Agenda) - Spelling Quiz (Friday, Review w/ Spelling City) Math: - Pg. 30 #1-5 (due tomorrow) - Patterns and Equations Unit Test (Wednesday, February 13th) Science: - Classroom Science Fair (March 7th) - School Science Fair (March 12th) Other: - Grades 5/6 Skiing (March 6th) - Energize Oil Country Parent Waiver (due ASAP) - Recorders (Payment due by February 15th) - Science Fair Boards ($7.00/Board) - Spirit Week: Tuesday, Hero Day (collecting Mini Wheats or similar) - Valentine's Family Dance (February 13th, 5:30-7:00 pm) - Classroom Celebration (February 14th) PEAK: Wednesday Tech & Trades Club - Mondays/Tuesdays, 3:15-4:15 pm Recycling Club - Day 3, 12:30-1:10 pm Grs. 5/6 Boys Basketball - Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3:15-4:15 pm Gr. 5/6 Girls Basketball - Mondays and Wednesday, 3:15-4:!5 pm Sharpen the Saw Club - Wednesdays, 3:15-4:!5 pm Broadcasting - Schedule Agenda Weekly Homework: 5x and 10x Quiz Language Arts: - Read 20 minutes (track in your Agenda) - Spelling Quiz (Monday, Review w/ Spelling City) Math: - Lesson #7 (due Monday) - Patterns and Equations Unit Test (Wednesday, February 13th) Science: - Classroom Science Fair (March 7th) - School Science Fair (March 12th) Other: - Grades 5/6 Skiing (March 6th) - Energize Oil Country Parent Waiver (due ASAP) - Recorders (Payment due by February 15th) - Science Fair Boards ($7.00/Board) - Spirit Week: Monday, Team CG Day (collecting Peanut Free Granola Bars) - Valentine's Family Dance (February 13th, 5:30-7:00 pm) - Classroom Celebration (February 14th) PEAK: Tuesday Tech & Trades Club - Mondays/Tuesdays, 3:15-4:15 pm Recycling Club - Day 3, 12:30-1:10 pm Grs. 5/6 Boys Basketball - Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3:15-4:15 pm Gr. 5/6 Girls Basketball - Mondays and Wednesday, 3:15-4:!5 pm Sharpen the Saw Club - Wednesdays, 3:15-4:!5 pm Broadcasting - Schedule |
