Last day! Thank you for the amazing year everyone. This has been a truly exceptional class and I will miss all of you so much. Thank you for all of your kindness and support all year long. From our fundraisers, healthy classroom parties, 100 acts of kindness, activity challenge, healthy cup, pond study trips, and more, it has been a wonderful, wonderful year. We will see you next year. Good luck in Grade 6 everyone!

I will be updated the website in the next few weeks, adding the rest of our yearbook videos, the summer reading list, etc. so keep checking for updates. We will also be adding some videos to the Christina Gordon facebook page from the new school, so stay tuned!

Reminder, our exciting Field Day is on Monday, June 26th, in the field behind our new school.

To ensure we are well prepared, please note the following:

1. ECDP parents bringing their children are reminded that the field day activities will run roughly from 10:30 am - 1:30 pm.  It would be a good idea to plan to be there by 10:15 am.

2. Parking will be limited to parking on the side of Parsons Creek Drive.  If possible we'd encourage carpooling or walking to the site.  Please do not use the St. Martha School parking lot, as their school will be in session on that day.

3. Because it is anticipated that it will be a hot, sunny day, please ensure your child comes prepared with adequate sunblock, a hat, a water bottle filled with water and a towel that he/she can sit on for the picnic lunch.

4. We will be providing students with a hamburger at lunchtime as well as some veggies.  Please provide your child with a mid morning snack to bring with them.  All students will be bringing their backpack with them to the field to carry their necessary belongings.

5. Volunteers - Thanks to those who volunteered to assist on that day.  We are always in need of more volunteers to ensure the day runs smoothly.  If you are willing to volunteer, please contact your child's teacher. Volunteers will be assigned responsibilities once we arrive on Monday, if not before.

Have a great weekend!

In Math today we continued to review quadrilaterals. Tomorrow we will begin learning about transformations that we can perform on the quadrilaterals that we have been learning about!

In Social Studies, we finished our discussion of Confederation. Today students reflected on what we have learned and considered the following questions:

1. How did John A. MacDonald and George-Etienne Cartier contribute as partners of Confederation?

2. How did circumstances surrounding Confederation eventually lead to French and English becoming Canada's two official languages?

3. How did the building of Canada's national railway affect the development of Canada?

4. Why were Aboriginal peoples excluded from the negotiations surrounding Confederation?

We also briefly discussed how the Statute of Westminster (1931) and the patriation of the Constitution (1982) lead us from Confederation to the country that we are today.

In Science today we looked more closely at animal and plant adaptations. For example, did you know that a moose has a very strong, flexible upper lip that it can use to grab plants? How about a muskrats furry feet? Or a dragonfly nymph's lower jaw that is able to shoot out and grab prey, etc.? Check out our slideshow for more!

In Math today we jumped ahead to Geometry and started looking at quadrilaterals. Here is what we learned:

- A quadrilateral with 4 equal sides, 4 equal angles is called a SQUARE
- A quadrilateral with 4 equal sides, unequal angles is called a RHOMBUS
- A quadrilateral with unequal sides, 4 equal angles is called a RECTANGLE
- A quadrilateral with unequal sides, unequal angles is called a PARALLELOGRAM

Did you know that all of the above are parallelograms? They all have 2 pairs of parallel sides!

- A quadrilateral with only 1 pair of parallel sides is called a TRAPEZOID

Picture

In Social Studies we began learning about Confederation. We have been watching the movie, "John A.: Birth of a Nation" to get a better idea of how George-Etienne Cartier, George Brown, and John A. MacDonald come to the idea of Confederation and creating a single British Colony from sea to sea. We'll finish the film tomorrow and discuss when the other provinces/territories are created, join Confederation, etc. If you want to watch the film at home, the link has been added to the "History" page.

This morning we had our final lesson on Fractions and Decimals. This unit has just flown by! Today we continued to practice converted fractions to decimals. Students are already familiar with this, as we have been writing decimals in expanded form throughout the unit. However, today this was our focus. Students should be able to convert any fraction over 10, 100, or 1000 into a decimal. See the examples below:

- 4/10 = 0.4
- 0.05 = 5/100
- 9/1000 = 0.009

Watch your place value spots carefully! Some are trickier than the above:

- 82/100 = 0.82
- 83/1000 = 0.083

Remember, there are also equivalent decimals! Keep an eye out for zeroes that are only acting as place value holders:

- 800/1000 = 0.800 = 0.80 = 80/100 = 8/10 = 0.8

In Social Studies today, we looked more closely at the fall of New France. Specifically, we focused on the Battle on the Plains of Abraham. This was one of the most decisive battles of the Seven Years War. After France surrendered Quebec City, they were eventually forced to concede and surrender New France to Britain. This finally answers our overarching question for this unit: "How did we go from being New France to British North America?" Of course, there is some more British North American history that we still need to cover. My favourite topic, Confederation, is coming up tomorrow! Remember, you can follow our timeline on the "History" page to see any of the stops that we have made in our survey of Canadian History. We have been covering many of the Identity outcomes alongside these outcomes, which is why the "Identity" page is so much smaller. Sorry!

Today was also our pond study with Inside Education. We are so thankful to Laura for all her help yesterday and today. We had so much fun learning more about wetlands habitats and marshes with her today. We started with some stations that were a lot of fun. We solved wetlands riddles, used binoculars to go birdwatching, looked for animal tracks and scat, etc. Next up, we did our pond dip. Using nets we were able to closely observe some of the wetlands invertebrates we have been learning about in class such as: water boatmen, freshwater shrimp, dragonfly nymphs, midges, and much more! Thank you so much to Finning Canada and Ducks Unlimited for sponsoring our trip today so that Laura could join us. We had a wonderful time.
