Please see the following email sent home to parents earlier this afternoon:

Good afternoon,

Just a few updates and reminders. First, at Christina Gordon we use many means to communicate to parents. We try to regularly update our website: christinagordon.fmpsdschools.ca, as well as  our classroom website: www.ashleybarrington.com. We regularly send mass emails to parents on important matters and we also use Instagram for both the school (@christinagfmpsd) and our classroom (@bogfrogm). However, the best way to keep informed in a timely manner on events happening or other important matters is to like us on Facebook at: Christina Gordon Public School or follow us on Twitter at school (@ChristinaGFMPSD) or in our classroom (@MsBarringtonCG). The school currently has 608 likes on Facebook and 544 people following us on Twitter, but we know we have lots of parents who are still not doing either. They are both great ways to stay informed.

Secondly, at our last School Council meeting on November 26th, Council approved the implementation of a Drop Off Zone as a means to alleviate some of the parking concerns around the school during morning drop off times. We will implement this as of Monday, December 4th.Traffic will still enter the school parking lot from Parsons Creek Drive as they currently do, but those willing and able to follow the guidelines of the Drop Off Zone may proceed to the Bus Lane, keeping left and strictly following the guidelines attached in this email. Please note that this is only for morning drop off. In order for this to work, it will be necessary for vehicles involved to move efficiently through the line, therefore in cases where parents must get out of the vehicle to get children out of seats or carseats, we would ask them to park as they normally would and avoid the Drop Off Zone. Please note we will be reevaluating this Drop Off Zone from time to time to determine its effectiveness and whether it should be continued.
Picture

On a related matter, please note that the Bus Lane (inside the fence closest to the school), with the exception of those using the Drop Off Zone, is for busses only between the hours of 8:15-9:00 am, 11:30-12:30 pm, and 3:00-3:45 pm. Please also remember that supervision does not begin until 8:30 am, so we ask that parents not drop students off until they are able to be properly supervised at this time. Thank you.

Thirdly, if you haven't already heard, there is an Angel Tree in the atrium and we have about 50 tags left. The gifts are due back at school by next Friday, December 8th. Please email me if you would like your student to bring home a tag. Thank you so much. This is Christina Gordon's 2nd Annual Angel Tree Project for the Salvation Army. As we try to instill citizenship into our students, we strive to make meaningful contributions that can locally help our community. The Salvation Army and families around Fort McMurray are very thankful for what our schools do to help. On Angel Tree is located in the atrium. On this tree are Angel Tags. Each tag represents a local child in need during this season. The tag will indicate the gender of the child, their age, their size, and provide some ideas for gifts that the child would like to receive. If you would like to help out with this project, please take a tag, purchase a gift for that specific child, and place it unwrapped, in a gift bag with the Angel Tag tied or taped to the front of the bag. Please bring or send the gift back to Christina Gordon and place it under the Angel Tree. They will be delivered to the Salvation Army and given to those specific children. Also, please involve your student as well and help them realize the  importance of giving to others without expecting anything in return. Tags will be available until December 6th. Thank you in advance for your support to this important cause. For more information, please email Ms. Grisch at: tammy.grisch@fmpsd.ab.ca.

Finally, please make sure that all ski forms are returned to the school on Monday, December 4th. As an extension of our Physical Education program, students in Grades 4-6 will have the opportunity to participate in two days of skiing at the Vista Ridge Ski Hill. Our first ski date is December 11th, 2017. Our second ski date will occur January 15th, 2018. Grades 4-6 students will have the opportunity to ski. Snowboarding will not be taught until Grade 6, unless students are experienced (level II or III) snowboarders with their own equipment. Lessons are mandatory for all students on all ski days regardless of ski level or ability. Please review the yellow parent permission form carefully, and ensure that BOTH SIDES are completed. This information will assist in getting students through the rental shop in a timely fashion and is important for skier safety. All payments, student travel waivers, and yellow parent permission forms must be received by December 4th. Cheques should be made payable to Christina Gordon Public School. Refunds will only be provided if a student is unable to participate due to medical reasons. Skiing is an optional activity, and should the cost create any hardship for any family, please contact the office and arrangements can be made in confidence. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school directly at 587-276-2017. Thank you everyone! As always, please let me know if there are questions or concerns in regards to any of the above,

- Ashley Barrington, Grade 4/5 Classroom Teacher

Please see the following letter from Ms. Grisch in regards to our upcoming Angel Tree campaign:

Dear Christina Gordon Parents/Guardians and Students:

As we try to instill citizenship into our students we strive to make meaningful contributions that can locally help our community. During this Holiday Season, Christina Gordon Public School is hosting our 2nd Annual Angel Tree Project for the Salvation Army. This our second year doing this initiative, it is FMPSD’s 4th year contributing, the Salvation Army and families around Fort McMurray are very thankful for what our schools do to help! Our Angel Tree will be located in the Atrium. On this tree are Angel Tags. Each tag represents a local child in need during this season. The tag will indicate the gender of the child, their age, their size and provide some ideas for gifts that the child would like receive. If you would like to help out with this project please take a tag, purchase a gift for that specific child, and place it, unwrapped, in a gift bag with the angel tag tied or taped to the front of the bag. Please bring or send the gift back to Christina Gordon School and place it under the Angel Tree, they will then be hand delivered to the Salvation Army and given to those specific children.

Also, please involve your child as well and help them realize the importance of giving to others without expecting anything in return. The Angel Tree will be up and ready for Healthy Family Fun Night on November 22nd, tags will be readily available until December 6th. The gifts must be at school by December 8th at the latest. Thank you so much in advance for your support and help in this important cause.

Today was: Day 4
Tomorrow is: Day 5

Please see the following email sent home earlier this evening. As always, let me know if there are questions or concerns or if you are NOT receiving emails from me.

Good afternoon,

Just a few updates on events and activities taking place at school. First, we have had a lot of inquiries into where students/parents can get Christina Gordon clothing. Clothing orders are done through the online Entripy Shop. Here you can order a wide variety of clothing from t-shirts to jackets in a variety of sizes. You can also choose from an assortment of colours and even choose the Christina Gordon logo you would prefer to use. In many cases, you can further personalize items by adding students' names, etc. Many of our parents and staff have ordered through our Entripy Shop and find the pricing and service very reasonable. You can order clothing online at: christinagordon.entripyshops.com.

Second, a reminder that tomorrow, Wednesday, November 15th, is a Family Open Gym Night. This event runs from 5:30-7:00 pm in the gymnasium. The gymnasium will be open and there will be access to equipment. Please note that this is a family event. Students need to attend and participate with supervision from an adult.

Third, our Healthy Family Fun Night is coming up on November 22nd from 5:30-7:00 pm. This will be a night of healthy, active fun for the whole family! Everyone should come ready to move and bring indoor shoes. We will have a variety of stations set up for families to enjoy. Each family will receive a punch card when they arrive and the goal is to visit all stations so that completed punch cards can be submitted for a prize draw at the end of the night. Unlike some of our other family events, it is best for families to plan to arrive from 5:30 pm and stay through to 7:00 pm so they can participate in all the evening has to offer.

Finally, please see the following updates from Leanne Allingham, Chair of our Christina Gordon School Fundraising Association:

This Saturday, November 18, 2017, Christina Gordon School Fundraising Association is hosting our very first Fall Market from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Please join us and help support many local vendors. We will have an ATM machine on site, along with a table for our poinsettia/wreath/planter fundraiser and our Fall Fire Pit Raffle Fundraiser. Wait... Fall Fire Pit Raffle Fundraiser, you say? YES! The CGSFA is having their very first raffle. Tickets are $5.00 each and will be available in the atrium on select morning and afternoon drop off/pick ups, or by contacting any executive member, or hit us up on our Facebook page, Christina Gordon School Fundraising Association. This prize is valued at over $400.00 and is stuffed full of all the goodies you will need for a backyard s’more roast.

Tomorrow is the last day for hot lunch ordering for the month of December. Please make sure all orders are placed and paid for by the end of the day, Wednesday, November 15, 2017. This Friday is also a Fri-YAY Popcorn Day. Popcorn is $2.00/bag.

Thank you everyone! As always, please let me know if there are any questions or concerns in regards to any of the above,

Today was: Day 3
Tuesday is: Day 4

Thank you to all the parents who came out to our 3 Way Conferences Tuesday and Wednesday. It was so nice getting to speak to all of you and to share your students successes with you. I know that we are off to a great start in Grade 4/5 and I can't wait to see how far your students come this year.

A big thank you to all of our students today. The students were invaluable to me in helping us to prepare for our Remembrance Assembly today. This morning they hung posters, artwork, set up chairs, etc. They helped clean the gym after our assembly as well, not to mention the AMAZING job Claira, Annouk, Kalem, and Zayne did as our student MCs. The assembly went well. It was interesting to hear retired WO Brian Holmes share some of the history of Remembrance Day, as well as getting to talk to him and hear some of his stories when he visited our classroom. It was also wonderful to have RCMP Members Andrew and Jana Starr, Branden's parents, join us in uniform and to share their family history with us.

We also explored the Canadian War Museum's online resource, Over the Top, today. This resource has students experience some of the challenges faced by frontline Canadian troops during WWI.

Have a wonderful long weekend everyone! Get lots of rest and enjoy spending time with your families. I'll see you all on Tuesday.
