Please see the following email, shared earlier this evening:

Good afternoon,

Just a few quick updates about events and activities taking place at school. First, students are bringing home permission forms in the student agenda this afternoon about the upcoming, "Who Do You Tell?" program that will be taking place on December 3-5th for the Grade 3 students at Christina Gordon school. This is a safety program that is presented by professional educators from the Waypoints Sexual Assault and Abuse Program. The language and messages are created and presented in a fun and positive manner so that students can learn they can get help from trusted adults if they are confused or scared about a touch or behaviour. Unfortunately, 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys in Canada will be sexually abused before the age of 18, which is why it is so important that students attend this safety program. This program has been designed specifically for this age and grade level so that the program is comfortable, enjoyable, and respectful of the students, their families, and the school community. Parents and guardians can learn more at www.waypointswb.ca or can email the Sexual Assault Public educators directly by email at: sap.educator2@waypointswb.ca. If your student does not attend this program, I will arrange for an alternative activity for them on these days.

Second, our annual Christmas Concerts are coming up. The concert for our classroom (Grades 1-3) will take place on December 12th beginning promptly at 6:00 pm in the gymnasium. As in previous years, students and families will enter through the front of the school. Students will then go to their classrooms to await their performance time. We do ask that all families plan to attend the entire concert. It is very distracting and disruptive to have people leaving during the performance (the Grades 4-6 students are performing a play in between each class' songs). Be respectful of the hardwork and dedication these students have put into preparing and rehearsing for this performance. At the end of the concert, families will come and pick up their student at their classrooms. Please let me know if your student will not be attending the concert. I will pass that information along to Mrs. Power to help with planning the event. Attached is a poster with all of the dates/times for all the concerts on it.

Third, the Spelling Bee of Canada will be holding their 2019/2020 regional competitions from March 21-April 5, 2020. However, the registration deadline is December 15th, 2019. Spelling Bees are a great way for students to improve their Language Arts skills in spelling, comprehension, communication, and critical thinking. It can be a way for students to build self-confidence and gain experience in public speaking. For more information or to register your student, see the attached poster or contact the SBOC at: info@spellingbeeofcanada.ca or 416-746-0072. You can also visit their website at: www.spellingbeeofcanada.ca.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns in regards to any of the above,

- Ashley Barrington, Grade 3 Teacher

Please see the following email, shared with families earlier this evening:

Good afternoon,

A few quick updates on events and activities taking place at school. First, as discussed at our Three-Way Conferences, students have access to both Mathletics and Reading Eggs so that they can continue to practice their skills at home. Mathletics (https://www.mathletics.com/ca/) is a web-based learning program that allows students to work at their own pace; anywhere, anytime. Mathletics is designed to help reinforce classroom learning through exciting challenges, lessons, and games. Students can also be assigned tasks based on their areas of need or strength, to further differentiate their Math instruction. Reading Eggs (https://readingeggs.com/) supports student learning by offering individual, one-on-one lessons that allow students to progress at their own rate, gradually building their reading confidence. Reading Eggs focuses on five key elements: phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency. Students are encouraged to use both of these resources at home. Student usernames and passwords can be found at the front of the student agenda. The usernames and passwords are the same for both websites. If your student has lost their username and password, please let me know and I will retrieve it for you.

Second, this Friday, November 15th, is the Fort McMurray School Division's Rock Your Mocs event. This event encourages students and families to unite together to honour indigenous history, culture, and traditions by wearing moccasins or turquoise. Students will also be learning about and completing some artwork in class on this date. Our Indigenous Student Leadership Team has also completed a display on the history and culture of the Métis people in Alberta, as part of Métis Week. If visiting the school, please sign in at the office and come and see their hard work on display.

Third, this upcoming Friday, November 15th, will be a Fri-Yay Popcorn Day. Students are welcome to purchase a bag of popcorn ($2 each) in support of Fundraising Association initiatives such as purchasing literacy resources (books), etc. that benefit the entire school.

Finally, next Tuesday, November 19th, will be our annual Family Science Night. APEGA (the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta) and Christina Gordon Public School will be hosting an Elementary Science Night this upcoming Tuesday, November 19th from 6:00-9:00 pm at Christina Gordon Public School. Join us for an evening of fun, hands-on science and engineering activities and demonstrations as well as building, exploring, and literacy stations. Use your five senses at our APPLE Schools taste testing centre to be entered to win a prize! Get to know our CG Cares team and learn more about their Salvation Army Angel Tree initiative. There is no cost to participate and all are welcome to attend. We hope to see you there!

As always, please let me know if there are any questions or concerns in regards to any of the above. Thank you,

- Ashley Barrington, Grade 3 Teacher
