Please see the following email, shared earlier this evening:

Good evening,

Just a few updates on events/activities taking place at school. First, on Wednesday, December 19th, between 11:00 am - 1:00 pm, the Christina Gordon School Fundraising Association is hosting a Winter Feast for all Christina Gordon students and staff. We are very excited to have this opportunity to share a meal as a school. The meal will consist of turkey, vegetables, and potatoes, while also having a vegetarian option. While we would love to be able to feed the whole school community, the Fundraising has budgeted for the students and staff to eat and will not be able to feed those outside of these groups. All food is being catered by a professional caterer. Realizing that not every student will like the options provided, we invite those who do not to please bring a bagged lunch and join us as we share a meal together. We are all very excited about this opportunity to build upon our CG family traditions and thank the Fundraising Association and the parents that have supported them throughout the year.

This week students are invited to participate in our annual holiday Spirit Week. This is a "fun"raiser, not a a fundraiser. We are not collecting donations for any specific cause at this time, we just want to have a fun way to celebrate the last week of school. As with past Spirit Days, students are encouraged to participate in the daily theme. The themes are:

Monday - Holiday Hat Day
Tuesday - Red and Green Day
Wednesday - Winter Wednesday
Thursday - Warm and Cozy Day (Pyjama Day)

On Thursday, Division 2 students (Grades 4-6) are also welcome to bring extra pillows or blankets from home. We will be watching a movie together in the school gymnasium that afternoon. The movie we will be watching is "Home Alone." Please let me know if you have concerns in regards to this selection.

Finally, as per the email from our school principal, Mr. Thorne, earlier today, on the recommendation of the Networks Committee that represents all school Parent Councils, the FMPSD has changed its Administrative Procedures regarding temperatures for students to be outside. The temperature will now be below -24 degrees celsius (including windchill) instead of the current below -20 degrees celsius (including windchill). With this change, students will now be taking recess and lunch recess outdoors at -24 degrees celsius (including windchill). The same applies to before the first bell rings in the morning. When the temperature is below -24 degrees, doors will be open for students to come inside, otherwise students will remain outside until the first bell rings at 8:35 am. This change will come into place on January 7th. With this change, it is important that parents ensure that their children are dressed appropriately for the weather. If parents and families require assistance in acquiring winter clothing, etc. please do not hesitate to contact me. The school may be able to provide assistance in this regard.

As always, please let me know if there are any questions or concerns in regards to any of the above,

- Ashley Barrington, Grade 5 Teacher

Please see the following email:

Good afternoon,

Just a few updates of activities and events taking place at school. First, at Christina Gordon one of our goals is to create young citizens that are committed to helping others. At this time of year in particular, as part of showing that #CGCares, we focus on giving to our local community, especially those who are in need. As in years past, we will be reaching out to our community through the Food Bank and Centre of Hope. Recognizing that many of our own families may also be finding things tight, we do not want to place any extra burden by organizing competitions that pit one class or student against others. Instead, our focus this year will be on reaching a goal as a school. That goal will be to collect 1000 items for the Food Bank. We will accept these donations anytime during the month of December. The deadline to donate items will be on Monday, December 17th. Items collected during our concerts on December 12th and 13th will also count towards our goal. During the evenings of our concerts we will raffle off tickets for the "Best Seat in the House." Winners will get to sit on comfortable seats during the concert. Proceeds from this will go to the Centre of Hope. Please give if you can, but only if you can.

Second, Grade 6 will be leading a Pop-Up Snack Shack for students in Grades 1-6 on Thursday, December 6th (Day 4) at morning recess. Grade 6 leaders will come to classes between 10:00 and 10:45 am with the carts. Snacks are:
$1 - goldfish crackers, fruit to go, snack pea chips, granola bars, water, 100% fruit juice $2 - Popcorn Please bring change. All proceeds will go to supporting the Grade 6 Edmonton trip.

Third, registrations from Grade 3 for the "All about Space" after school program with Bricks 4 Kidz was extremely low (only 3 registered). As a result, it has been decided that they will open this program up for Grades 3-5 at this time, and instead of the program starting on December 5th as originally scheduled, it will start after the Christmas break. Please keep in mind that while this program is hosted in the school, it is independently run by a private business, Bricks 4 Kidz, and there is a fee attached to this program. All questions should be directed to them. Please see the provided link to register: https://my.bricks4kidz.com/index.php?action=classdetail&record=211041. They accept Visa, MasterCard, or an e transfer to eseggie@bricks4kidz.com (make the password Lego18).

Finally, all ski forms are due this Wednesday, December 5th. As part of the Physical Education curriculum, students are required to work in alternative environments. Our ski trip is part of our Physical Education curriculum and we ask that students do their best to attend. Our first ski day will occur on Monday, December 10th. A few reminders about this trip. First, snowboarding will not be taught until Grade 6, unless students are experienced (level II or III) snowboarders with their own equipment. Lessons are mandatory for all students on ski days regardless of skill level or ability. We will leave school at 9:00 am and return by 3:00 pm. Students will need to bring their own bagged lunch or money to purchase lunch at the hill. Please note that students are strongly encouraged to bring their own bagged lunch. Students are given the same amount of time for lunch that they receive at school (20-30 mins); if there are long lines at the canteen, etc. it can be difficult for students to purchase and eat their entire lunch in the allotted time, and we don't want any students to risk going hungry. Especially when they are getting so much exercise. It is best to pack snacks to bring with us, and then students can use their own judgement as to whether or not they would like or are able to purchase food. Students bringing their own equipment for skiing or snowboarding, can bring it directly to the Christina Gordon entrance on the morning of December 10th, where transportation will be arranged. The school is not responsible for lost or damaged equipment. Students are reminded to dress for the weather (jacket, hat, mittens, snow pants). If skiing is cancelled due to weather, all attempts will be made to reschedule. If you are a parent chaperone for this trip, we do recommend driving yourself to the hill if possible. You are welcome to meet us at school and follow us or meet us at the ski hill around 9:30 am. Space on the busses is limited because we have five classes attending this trip.

As always, please let me know if there are questions or concerns in regards to any of the above,

- Ashley Barrington, Grade 5 Teacher
