First, this week is Spirit Week for all students at Christina Gordon, to celebrate the last week of the Amazing Waste Race. Our class has previously helped with Spring Cleanup as part of this challenge and is composting with our classroom isopods. This week, students and families at Christina Gordon will be participating in the following:
Second, our classroom is going to be holding a small Swap & Shop as part of the Amazing Waste Race. On Thursday, May 30th, students are invited to bring in clean, gently used items from home that they no longer want or need. Students can then swap these items for something "new," or can donate these items for others to reuse. Items like books, toys, etc. will be donated to Christina Gordon. Other items will be donated to other community organization such as the Center of Hope, etc. All students are welcome, but are not obligated, to participate. Students who do not have any items for donation will be assisting in other ways, such as helping to set up, keeping things organized, etc. Third, our annual school Talent Show is upcoming and will be taking place on June 14th at 1:15 pm. Auditions for the Talent Show will take place next week, from June 3rd-6th. The following are the dates of the auditions:
Auditions will begin at lunch (12:30 pm) in the Music Room. This year, we are excited to have student leaders helping to make the final selection. Members of our Lighthouse Team will be assisting Mrs. Power throughout the selection process. Students are reminded to please practice and prepare for auditions. A large number of students audition in a short amount of time. As such, we ask that parents do not attend auditions, due to limited space. Students selected to perform will be informed in advance and parents are welcome to attend the Talent Show on June 14th in the school gymnasium. If you would like to follow our Music classes, join Mrs. Power's Facebook group: "Mrs. Power's Music Room" (https://www.facebook.com/groups/373510413495985/). Finally, a reminder that a $5.50 bussing fee was required to pay for the transportation to and from our Wetlands field trip this past Friday. Guardians who have not already done so, will need to pay for this trip using Parent Portal (as per our earlier ski trip to Vista Ridge). For those that are struggling to use Parent Portal, please contact Sherri Manuel (sherri.manuel@fmpsd.ab.ca) in the office for assistance. If anyone is unable, for any reason, to pay this bussing fee at this time, please let me know and I will see that alternative arrangements can be made. As always, thank you everyone. Good evening, As you know, we are going to be travelling to the Texaco storm pond off of Highway 69 on Friday with both Grade 5 classes. This field trip is being coordinated with Inside Education, who will be running the programming. They require a ratio of 1 adult for every 8 students for their programming. Currently, we have 2 confirmed parent chaperones for both classes. We will not be able to participate in this program if this does not change. Please, if anyone has any time available to volunteer on Friday, we need parent chaperones to attend this trip. Unfortunately, as we are going to be transporting two large classes of Grade 5 students, the bus will be full for this trip. So, we are asking parents to drive out to meet us or to follow us in their own vehicle. If planning to follow us, the bus will be leaving school at 11:15 am on Friday morning. We will leave the storm pond at approximately 2:00 pm, and should be returning to school around 2:45 pm. If parents are comfortable meeting us at the Texaco storm pond they may do so. We will be arriving at approximately 12:00 pm. The directions are as follows: From Fort McMurray 1. Head south on Hwy 63 to Saprae Creek Trail/Hwy 69 2. Turn left (east) onto Saprae Creek Trail and continue past the airport 3. Turn right at the road leading to the U-Haul yard. Continue straight past McKenzie Kennels to the end of the road 4. Inside Education staff will meet you in the parking area at the end of the road Attached is also a map as well as information from Inside Education for volunteers about the programming taking place that day. Again, we need parent chaperones in order to participate in this program! We really appreciate having volunteers join us on this trip. If you are able to volunteer, please contact myself or Ms. Reid as soon as possible. Thank you, - Ashley Barrington, Grade 5 Teacher Agenda Language Arts: - Read 20 minutes (track in your Agenda) Math: - Lesson #7 Science: - Landfill Field Trip (May 23rd) - Inside Education Texaco Pond Study (May 24th) PEAK: Friday Tech & Trades Club - Mondays/Tuesdays, 3:15-4:30 pm Recycling Club - Day 2, 10:40-10:55 am Recycling Club - Day 3, 12:30-1:10 pm Grs. 5/6 Badminton - Thursdays, 3:15-4:!5 pm Learning Through the Arts- Thursdays, 3:15-4:15 pm Grs. 5/6 Art Club - Wednesdays, 3:15-4:00 pm Broadcasting - Schedule Please see the following email, shared with families earlier this evening:
Good evening, We have a very busy week ahead of us. First, the Grade 5 boys will be travelling to the Syncrude Sports and Wellness Centre tomorrow for Mega Boyz. Students attending this trip need to come prepared for a day of physical activity. Students should be wearing comfortable clothing that they can be active in. Students will need indoor shoes (they can bring their pair from school). Students should also pack healthy snacks and bring a water bottle (lunch is provided). We will be leaving the school at approximately 9:00 am and will return before dismissal. On Thursday, our classroom (Grade 5B) will be taking a field trip to the municipal landfill. We will be leaving the school at approximately 9:30 am to travel to the landfill and should return to the school around 12:00 pm. Students should prepare for this field trip by making sure to wear proper outdoor shoes; open shoes (ie. sandals, etc.) are not recommended. Parent chaperones are welcome to join us on the bus for this trip; see my previous email for more information. Friday, both Grade 5 classes will be travelling by bus to the Texaco storm pond off of Highway 69 for a wetlands pond study with Inside Education. We will be leaving the school at approximately 11:15 am and leaving the storm pond to return to school at approximately 2:00 pm. Students should prepare for this field trip by packing their backpack with a healthy snack, a full water bottle (drinking water is not available on site), any ana-kits, inhalers, or other medications (as required), sturdy footwear (no sandals; we also do not recommend rubber boots as they can damage the wetlands edge and are difficult to walk in), extra socks (we will likely get wet), and a sweater or jacket (the weather can change throughout the day; even if it is a sunny morning, please come prepared!). If the weather is cool on Friday, we will still be attending. Students should bring rain gear (ex. waterproof jackets, pants, garbage bags, etc.), an extra sweater or jacket, and even hats and mittens (they are small, easy to pack, and would be helpful on a cold day). We are still in need of parent chaperones for this trip; ideally we would have a ratio of 1 adult to 8 students. Please let myself, Mrs. Kelly, or Ms. Reid know right away if you are available. Unfortunately, as we are transporting two classes, we will not be able to accomodate parent chaperones on the bus for this particular trip. We are asking that parents either meet us at the site or follow the bus to the site. If you have already agreed to volunteer, see my previous email for more information. There is a bussing fee for this field trip of $5.50 that needs to be paid on Parent Portal. If you previously tried to make a payment, it may not have been available yet. As of this morning, our account should be updated. Please use Parent Portal to make this payment, as per district policy. If a student is unable to make the payment at this time, please let me know right away so that alternative arrangements can be made. Any difficulties with Parent Portal can be brought to myself or Mrs. Manuel (sherri.manuel@fmpsd.ab.ca) in the office. Finally, this week is Indigenous Awareness Week across the Fort McMurray Public School District. Each day, students will be participating in activities/lessons surrounding First Nations, Metis, and Inuit culture and history. Our classroom has been studying this throughout Social Studies this year, but for this week we have already begun learning about and creating our own medicine wheels as well as learning more about Inuit creation stories. Parents and families are welcome to join us this week at both our assembly (we have students sharing a slideshow and drumming), on Thursday at 1:00 pm, and at our art gallery walk (this is where our medecine wheels as well as other artifacts will be displayed), on Friday from 11:00-11:30 am (this is when it is open to the public; we will be on our field trip but will be viewing the art as a class upon our return). You can RSVP to the art gallery walk using the following link: https://www.evite.com/event/02D2YHDBON2YN4DDEEPJO25XPRGUYI/rsvp?utm_source=NA&utm_medium=sharable_invite&utm_campaign=send_sharable_link.
