In Math today the Grade 4 and Grade 5 students continued to work on division. The Grade 4 students are working on using arrays and multiplication facts to help them to solve division questions. Tomorrow the Grade 4 students will explore even further the relationship between multiplication and division. Take the following example:

Eg. 27 / ? = 9

We can use our 9x tables to help us solve the above. We know that:

9 x 3 = 27, so we also know that...

27 / 3 = 9

So, we know the missing number must be a 3 to make the statement 27 / 3 = 9 true.

The Grade 5 students continued to work on estimation of division questions. Students are encouraged to use their multiplication facts to help them to choose a compatible number to use during estimation. Take the following example:

Eg. 272 / 3 = ?

We can use our 3x tables to help us to estimate the above. We know that:

9 x 3 = 27, so we also know that...

27 / 3 = 9, using our knowledge of multiples of 10, we know that...

270 / 3 = 90

So, we can estimate that 272 / 3 is about 90.

In Language Arts today, students were asked to annotate the poem "Kindness" by Naomi Shihab Nye. Students were asked to:

- underline any unfamiliar words
- use an exclamation mark (!) to indicate important or significant phrases
- use a question mark (?) to indicate a phrase that puzzled them
- highlight what the most significant line or phrase was in their opinion
- use an asterisk (*) to indicate any line or phrase they disagreed with
- summarize each stanza of the poem in their own words

Afterwords, students were asked to write their own 10-line poem on what kindness means to them. Each student wrote a first draft and then typed a second draft of their poems.
