Today we continued to work on multiplying by multiples of 10, 100, or 1000. Today, we looked at using the same strategies that we use to multiply by 10, 100, or 1000 to help us with other multiples. Take the example below:

Picture

When multiplying 3 x 60, we can multiply 3 x 6. Since we know that 3 x 6 = 18, we know that 3 x 60 = 180. We just need to add another zero (move up a place-value place).

You can also use this strategy to multiply large numbers together; if they are multiples of 10, 100, or 1000. Take the example above, to solve 40 x 70 you can first solve 4 x 7. Since we know that 4 x 7 = 28, we know that 40 x 70 = 2800. We just needed to add two zeroes (move up two place-value places). We will continue to practice this skill tomorrow; specifically we will be reviewing and looking at how multiplying by multiples of 10, 100, or 1000 change the place-value of numbers.

Today we were fortunate enough to have Jess from Future Goals join us. Future Goals is a STEM program created in partnership by EverFi and the NHL. Jess is the coordinator for the Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames, and the Winnipeg Jets (though she confessed to me that she is an Oilers fan at heart). Jess was here to show us some of the ways that NHL players use Math and Science to help them become better athletes. We now all have an EverFi account that we can use to keep exploring these concepts. Students are able to earn trophies when they complete different modules. If students earn all the trophies for their age group, they win the Stanley Cup. Want to know what happens if everyone in our class wins the Stanley Cup? We win a signed game puck from the Edmonton Oilers for our class as well as signed hockey cards for the students! So keep working on those lessons Grade 5! You can access your EverFi account at home using your Google account info. as your username and password. We will also be adding it as a Technology Centre to our classroom, alongside Tynker and Mathletics which we already use.

The Interior Plains unit did a great job presenting to the class on their region today. They had some pretty tricky questions in their quiz too! You can check out their presentation below. Remember, all the presentations and fact sheets for the regions are on the "Geography" page.
