Please see the email below that was sent home this afternoon in regards to our upcoming classroom and school Science Fairs:

Good afternoon,

It’s that time of year again! Christina Gordon Public School is looking forward to our upcoming school Science Fair. Science Fair logbooks were sent home today. Students are required to use these logbooks while conducting their experiments. The logbooks contain the steps needed for students to follow the scientific method, the rules, and the specific forms that are needed to be filled out depending on the topic of the Science Fair project. Please read through the logbook with your child this evening, and let me know if you have any questions. Students will be given time this week to do some initial brainstorming and researching about their projects. This is a good opportunity for them to develop their essential question. I also recommend that students work on this project well ahead of the due date. A sample schedule of a student work schedule is included below:

January 24th - Research, Essential Question
January 31st - Essential Question, Hypothesis
February 7th - Variables, Procedure, Materials
February 14th - Data Collection
February 21st - Data Analysis, Conclusion
February 28th - Display Board, Complete Project
March 7th - Classroom Science Fair (Project Due)

Students are NOT required to follow the above work schedule, and may work on the project at their own pace, but students need ensure that they are not leaving this project until the last minute. I will also be allowing students to bring their logbooks to school and to ask questions or advice about what they have completed so far and next steps on their projects.

Our Classroom Science Fair will take place on March 7th and our School Science Fair will be on March 14th. Students are assessed on their Science Fair projects, so please review the rubric located in the Science Fair logbook. Students have the choice to complete their projects on their own or with a partner. If working with a partner, please ensure that the students are able to meet outside of school.

For further information and tips on the Regional Science Fair please see http://wbrsf.ca/links/. This resource provides students and parents with websites that they can use to help design, plan, organize, and present their projects. You can also visit our Classroom Website and click on the Science Fair link (under Grade 4 or Grade 5 Science).

Thanks everyone!
