Another short post! I'm really sorry to do this two days in a row. Here is a summary:

- In Math today we reviewed the estimation strategies that we learned before the break: front-end estimation, compatible numbers, and compensation. Students are also reviewing how to round numbers to the nearest ten, hundred, and thousand. Remember, you can use benchmarks to help you. For example, is 1374 closer to 1000 or 2000? Draw a number line starting at 1000 and counting up by 100's until you reach 2000. Circle 1300. Is it closer to 1000 or 2000? 

- In Language Arts today we started our newest reading strategy: comparing and contrasting. We actually started with this strategy first thing this morning as our Math Journal question asked us to compare bar graphs and double bar graphs. One way to compare two like objects, stories, etc. is to ask yourself, "How are they alike?" "How are they different?" "How are they the same?" You can use a Venn Diagram to keep comparisons organized. It also helps you to quickly see the answers to these questions. Today we watched Disney's "Silly Symphony - The Three Little Pigs" to remind us of this fairytale. Then we read a fractured fairy tale "The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs." Fractured fairy tales contain elements from the original story, but make key changes in order to tell the story in a different way or from a different perspective. This story tells the story from the wolf's perspective. Comparing the two texts (one media, one print) was modelled and practiced as a whole class, then students completed a think, pair, share about the texts, and finally, students worked individually to organize their comparisons into a Venn Diagram.
