Today we continued to review problem solving in Math. We are currently working on multi-step problems. Some of these problems involve solving one operation and then using that information to use another operation to solve the problem. For example:

Jill earned $513 babysitting and doing chores last year. She earns $5 an hour when she babysits. Jill babysat for 34 hours last year. How much money did Jill earn doing chores?

34 x 5 = 170
513 - 170 = 343
Jill earned $343 doing chores last year.

Students are encouraged to practice multiplication and division every night this week! There is unit test for Unit 3: Multiplication and Division on Monday, January 14th.

In Science today, we began our study of Electricity. Students began by learning about some of the safety issues to be careful of when working with or studying electricity. You can view any of the videos that we used today on the Grade 5 Science -- Electricity page.

Today we also completed a cloze reading passage on Charles Dickens. Before the break, students had been listening to, "A Christmas Carol" in their Music classes. Today, we continued by taking time to make inferences to complete a reading passage on Charles Dickens and then to answer some reading comprehension questions about the author.
