In Math today, the students moved on from practicing estimating sums to estimating differences. We are still using the same three strategies: front-end estimation, compatible numbers, and compensation. Consider the following example:

4568 - 342 =

Front-end Estimation: consider the first 1-2 digits of the actual numbers.

4500 - 300 = 4200

Compatible Numbers: consider the actual numbers; choose an easier number to work with. You can use rounding, multiples of 10, 100, 1000, etc.

4570 - 340 = 4230

Compensation: round one of the numbers up to an easier number and round the other number down to an easier number; this splits the difference and allows you to receive a more accurate estimate.

4565 - 345 = 4220

We are almost done this Math unit. We will have our unit test next week on Wednesday. Students are encouraged to begin reviewing as quickly as possible; a little each night. Students have access to our Math textbook through the ebook (www.mathmakessense.ca). They also have a PDF of the Math textbook in their GoogleDrives that they can use. There are also review games and review booklets available to students through our "Whole Numbers" page under "Math." Students can also review using their Mathletics accounts.

In Social Studies today students continued to work on their final regions project. Students are going to complete their research tomorrow and begin putting their projects together this week. I'm excited to share the results.

In Art today, students began an artist study based on the work of Antoni Gaudi. Students are working to create their own mosaics. These are just 1 of 2 mosaics that we will be creating.
