Today in Math, we continued to practice comparing and ordering fractions. Students have learned to compare fractions that have the same denominator, the same numerator, and fractions with different numerators and denominators. For fractions with the same denominator, the fraction with the highest numerator is the largest fraction. Think of it this way, if you have 1/4 of a pizza and your friend has 3/4 of the pizza, they have more pizza. They have 3 slices you only have 1 slice. For fractions with the same numerator, the fraction with the highest denominator is the smallest fraction. Think of it this way, if you have a 5/6 of a pizza and your friend has 5/8 of a pizza, you have more pizza. This is because a pizza cut into sixths will have bigger pieces than a pizza cut into eighths. Finally, when comparing fractions with different numerators and different denominators, it can be helpful to draw a diagram to help you to see which is larger and which is small. Be careful that you draw the same sized shape to help with your comparisons! We will continue to work with fractions tomorrow before moving on to decimals.

In Science today students continued to discuss, "What is a Wetland?" Today we looked at living and non-living things work together in a wetland and how how pollution can impact a wetlands. We focused on non-living things. Students learned that wetlands need water, air, soil, dead animal/plant matter in order to be sustainable. If chemicals from fertilizers or dirt from construction cloud the water, the wetland can be severely compromised. Why does this matter? Well, wetlands are important because: 1) they are a water source that can store water for surrounding areas, 2) they provide life support to diverse plants and animals, 3) wetlands can actually filter water to reduce pollution. They are like natural water treatment facilities. Lots of plants and animals rely on these environments, so they must be protected. We also went outside today to practice recording observations. Today students were observing non-living objects eg. rocks, popsicle sticks, dead grass, gravel, etc.

We also helped our ECDP buddies and ECDP Reggio to complete their Dream Catchers today. We listed to "Grandmother's Dreamcatcher," by Becky Ray McCain and then Pollyanna McBain from the Wood Buffalo Regional Library shared some information about her Mi'kmaq culture and traditional dream catchers with us. We were also able to glue our buttons on to the dream catcher that is being constructed to be on display at our new school in September!
