Today we continued to practice comparing and ordering fractions. Today students reviewed the previous strategies that we have been using:

- comparing like denominators
- comparing like numerators
- comparing fractions with unlike numerators and denominators

Today we added a cross-multiplication strategy that can be used to compare any of the above. Check out the example below:

When comparing 3/4 and 2/4, we can cross-multiply. Multiply the denominators of each fraction by the numerators of the other fraction. In this example, 4 x 2 = 8 and 3 x 4 = 12. Since we know that 12 > 8, we know that 3/4 > 2/4. We can use this strategy to compare any pair of fractions:

In Science today, we laid out our classroom model of a wetland. We will be building a marsh. So far we have only added the non-living components of our wetland: gravel (rocks), mud/dead plant and animal materials, water, and air. We also began looking at "What Lives In a Wetland?" Today we looked more closely at the zones of a wetlands: upland, riperian, and aquatic zones. We will look more closely at the plants, vertebrates, and invertebrates that live in these zones in upcoming classes.

In Health, students decoded their final Power4Bones secret message. We have learned a lot about bone health in this unit: to eat bone healthy foods containing calcium and vitamin d, to exercise using weight bearing activities, that the pre-teen years are crucial in bone development, and today we learned that it is important to try and get 4 servings of milk and alternatives daily to maintain bone health. Stay tuned to see the fun PSAs about bone health that we will be creating.
