In Math today we continued to explore area and perimeter. Today students were working with manipulatives and graphing paper to find as many rectangles with a given area as they possible could. Remember, just because rectangles have the same area, doesn't mean that they have the same perimeter. Students are also being asked to consider the differences between area and perimeter and how this affects the units that we use. Perimeter is a measurement of distance; the length around the outside of a shape. For length, we can use just one unit: mm, cm, m, etc. Area is a measurement of the surface; using both the length and the width of a shape to calculate. For length and width, we can use two units of measure: mm2, cm2, m2, etc. (sorry, I can't type in superscript on here; units squared has a small 2 in the upper corner). Don't forget, for perimeter we can use units but for area we must use units squared. This is why it is so important to not forget to record your units when working in measurement. It can make a big difference!

In Language Arts today we continued to work on our Language Arts stories. We are currently focusing on including the characters, setting, and problem in the first few paragraphs of our story. We want to tell the reader this information at the beginning of our story! Remember, it is a short story.

In Science today, we reviewed the ways in which we can separate solid-solid mixtures: sieves, magnets, water, and wind. Then we discussed the properties of the solids that made this possible; ie. size, magnetism, weight, density, buoyancy, etc. We also looked at mixing solids and liquids today. We mixed sand/water and brown sugar/water. The sand and water stayed separated, with the sand settling at the bottom. Later, we were able to use a filter to help separate and recover the sand. The brown sugar dissolved into the water, creating a solution. A solution is when the particles of one substance (solute) are dissolved in another (solvent). A solution is a special type of mixture in which you can no longer distinguish between the solute and solvent because the particles have become uniformly intermingled (evenly mixed). Later when we tried to recover the sugar with a filter we found that we could not. The sugar had mixed completely into the water.
