Today in Math we continued to study volume. Today we were learning about how we can use displacement to help us to measure volume. For example, a centimetre cube will displace one millilitre of water. This is because a centimeter cube and a millimetre take up the same amount of space - they have the same volume, although they are measured in different units. Centimeters are used for solid objects and millilitres are used for liquids. However, they are related, as seen above. That means that we can use displacement to measure the volume of solid objects. For example, if I place 10 cm cubes in a graduated cylinder, the water level will rise 10 ml. So, if I started with 400 ml of water, after adding 10 cm cubes, the graduated cylinder will read 410 ml of water. Calculating the difference before the cubes and after the cubes were added, will give us the volume of the cubes (410 ml - 400 ml = 10 ml). Remember, solid objects are measured in cm! Since we know that 10 ml of water was displaced, we know that the volume of the cubes are 10 centimetres cubed. This is our last topic. We will review next week before moving on to Fractions and Decimals. 

In Science today, we reviewed for our unit test tomorrow. Students are bringing home two worksheets that they can use to help them to study. One is a summary of the unit. The other is practice questions that are related to the questions that will be on tomorrow's test. Students can also review their notes (in their binders), study our slides (on "Chemistry" page), play a game (on "Chemistry" page), etc. in order to prepare for the test tomorrow. It is also important to get a good night's sleep and to drink lots of water so you are at your best tomorrow. 

Today we learned some First Nation's games as part of our FNMI (First Nations, Metis, and Inuit) Week celebrations. The first was based on a way that Inuit peoples could keep their heart rates elevated and their feet warm in the Arctic - Cold Feet. We also learned about two games that helped us to practice improving our aim in accuracy. Remember, if you have to hunt for your food, accuracy would be very important to you.These skills would need to be practiced. 

In Art today students continued to study texture through our mentor artist Eric Carle. Students cut out the painted, textured, paper they created last week to make illustrations and collages. They are turning out wonderfully!
