Grade 3B Info., Updates, News

Wait until you see what we've been up to...

In Math today, we reviewed using capacity to help us to determine the volume of unknown shapes. For example, if you have a graduated cylinder that holds 100 mL of water. If you add a pencil to the graduated cylinder and the water is displaced by 10 mL, then we know that the pencil is close to 10 centimeters cubed. Tomorrow we will be finishing our Measurement unit before moving on to Fractions and Decimals.

Our Language Arts today was also on an upcoming Science topic. In Science we have begun our study of Wetlands. Today students began looking more closely at our caterpillars who are in the process of undergoing a complete metamorphosis to turn into a butterfly. Students all examined their specimen closely, noting what they observed, date, and time. Students also named their specimen:

1A, B: Jimmy Jr., Jimmy
2A, B: Bobafly, Kattypillar
3A, B: Big Bertha, Sprinkles
4 A, B, C: Billy, Ogie, Jimmy J
5 A, B: Moby Dick, Cupcake

Currently, the majority of our caterpillars have begun to form a hard outer case (chrysalis). When they exit they will be butterflies. Check out the Kahoot! or the video on our "Wetlands" page for more information. In Language Arts, we reviewed skimming and scanning as reading strategies. Students practiced skimming and scanning a book called, "Butterflies and Moths." The Kahoot! quiz about corresponds with this book. Were all groups able to skim well enough to answer the questions? Does skimming help you to find specific details or the general topic of a book? Stay tuned, we will continue to explore this tomorrow.

In Health today, students continued to work on our Power4Bones unit. Today students learned that healthy bones need calcium, vitamin d, and other bone nutrients. Where can they find them? Food of course! Students can continue playing "Shopping Spree" on their Google Accounts in order to practice identifying bone healthy foods.
