In Math today we began looking at equivalent fractions. In order to do this, we used a Math5Live lesson. You can find ALL of the Math5Live lessons by following the link under "Links." They can be a great way to learn, review, and study math. Today we first explored what is an equivalent fraction. For example:

1/3 = 2/6

We did this by drawing two circles of equal value. The first we divided into 3 equal parts. This is because you can read fractions like this: one third OR one "out of" three. I like to remind myself to say "out of" because it helps me to draw the fraction if I need to do so. Since the numerator is 1 and the denominator is 3, we divide the circle into 3 equal parts and shade in 1 part of the circle. 

Next we take the other circle (same value as the first) and divide it into 6 equal parts. This is because you can read that fraction as: two sixths OR 2 "out of" six. Since the numerator is 2 and the denominator is 6, we divide the circle into 6 equal parts and shad in 2 parts of the circle.

When comparing both circles, we can easily see that 1/3 and 2/6 represent the same value. They are the same amount. Thus, we can say that one third and two sixths are equivalent fractions. We will continue to look at equivalent fractions tomorrow. 

In Social Studies today, students finished and shared their fur trade posts with the class. We had a lot of creativity shown in this assignment. Everyone did a great job.

In Science we continued to look at Wetlands. Today we took a closer look at bogs and fens. Be sure to check the "Wetlands" page in order to few our notes and classroom activities. Tomorrow we will be taking a closer look at how living things and non-living things in a wetland interact. 

In Health today, the students continued to look at their bone health using Power4Bones. Today we discovered that weight bearing activities lead to better bone growth and development. Activities such as: running, jumping, etc. Other physical activities such as swimming, cycling, etc. are great for your overall health and promote healthy cardiovascular systems, etc. but weight bearing activities promote bone growth. Don't forget what we learned on Monday! You also need to eat foods rich in calcium, vitamin d, and other bone nutrients.
