In Math today we continued to work on our Measurement projects. All students finished measuring their playground today. Students have now been working together to calculate their playground's area and perimeter. We will be finishing our final calculations and comparing our results tomorrow.

In Language Arts today, we continued to work on Narrative Writing. Today we worked on adding more detail to the middle of a story. You can do this by thinking of TIEFET:

Transition eg. "Then it hit me, "I've got it!""
Idea ie. How are you going to try and solve the problem?
Event's actions ie. What actions take place? (3)
Failure ie. Why doesn't this work?
Emotion ie. How do you feel when this fails?
Transition

Students will continue to work on adding details to the middle of their stories tomorrow.

In Science today, we reviewed what we had previously learned about solutions, suspensions, and separating liquids and solids. Today we learned about two ways that we can separate liquid and solid mixtures when a solid dissolves into a liquid. The simplest way is to use evaporation. However, this won't leave us with both the solid and liquid that we began with, as the liquid will evaporate into the air. However, we can use a process called distillation. When using distillation, you can boil off the liquid, leaving the solid behind. This is faster than evaporation. If you use a closed system with a condenser tube, you can cool the water vapour (ie. steam) until it once again becomes liquid. This will leave you with the solid (left behind) and the liquid (condensed into a liquid once more) that you originally began with. We also started looking at reversible and irreversible changes today. An irreversible change is one that cannot return to its previous form; something new has been created. Think about cooking an egg. It can never return to being a raw egg. A reversible change that can return to its original state. Think of freezing and then melting water. We will continue to discuss irreversible and reversible changes tomorrow when we begin looking at acids and bases.

In Social Studies today, we began looking at two important historical figures in Canadian History: Samuel de Champlain and Jacques Cartier. Visit the links on the "History" page to learn more about these important figures and the role they played in the discovery and settlement of early Canada, specifically New France.
