Grade 3B Info., Updates, News

Wait until you see what we've been up to...

In Math today, we explored some of the new resources on the "Patterns and Equations" page. These games can be played at home or at school to help students further practice and explore the concepts that we have been covering in Math. There is also an extra workbook that students are welcome to print and use at home if they want or require extra practice. Remember, I will post these resources for each unit, so be sure to check for new pages frequently.

In Language Arts today, students wrote a new entry in their Writer's Notebook. Today students responded to the question: "If you could mix any two beverages together to create a new flavour sensation, which two would you combine?" Remember, writing in our Writer's Notebook is a fun way to practice adding detail and description. Students are encouraged to use their five senses: taste, touch, smell, hear, and smell in their entries.

We also had a book raffle today for some of our new classroom library books. Congratulations to all the winners! Remember, as long as you sign your books out, you are able to take them home to read.

In Science today, students completed an experiment called "Convection Currents." Students did some initial research on how air moves and on convection currents. Then, we used two strips of paper to be able to see how air moves between an indoor and outdoor environment, where the temperature is different. We used one piece of paper close to the top of the door and another near the bottom of the door. When we opened the door, we noticed that the paper at the top of the door moved inwards and the paper at the bottom of the door moved outwards. Using our research, we realized that this had to do with convection. The cold air outside pushes its way inside. As the air at the top of the door cools and falls, it is pushed outside to make room for the incoming air. Convection currents explain how we feel the wind. Think about the wind outside on a sunny day compared to the wind outside at night. This can best be discussed when using the beach as an example. During the day, we feel a "Sea Breeze." The cold air above the water moves towards the warmer land. The warm air above the land rises, cools and falls. Thus, we feel a breeze blowing in from the sea. During the night, we feel a "Land Breeze." The colder air above the land moves toward the warmer sea. The warmer air above the water rises, cools and falls. Thus, we feel a breeze blowing out from the land.
