Today was: Day 4
Tomorrow is: Day 5

I am so sorry about how behind I have been getting! It has been crazy busy around here. I will try my best to do better.

Today the students and I continued working on Data Analysis. Grade 4 students are now working at taking collected data and creating their own pictographs. Choosing an appropriate key is challenging for some and we will be continuing to practice this in upcoming classes. The Grade 5 students are practicing creating their own double bar graphs. Students have become skilled at taking collected data and creating a double bar graph. Today students conducted their own experiment, collected their own data, and then displayed it as a double bar graph. This was more challenging for some who were unsure of what they were comparing and so were unsure of where to start the graph. We will continue to build on this in upcoming classes. Unfinished work was assigned for homework.

We also worked together to get ready for our official Grand Opening today! It was very exciting to have so many guests. We created welcome banners, brainstorming what we liked best about Christina Gordon so far. I saw lots of great responses from friends, teachers, flexible seating, chromebooks, etc.

In Science today, we continued to look at waste. We focused today on how to separate or sort waste. For example, in a student's lunch there might be: plastic, aluminum, paper, organic material, glass, etc. depending on what they have brought for lunch. Today we specifically focused on organic matter and plastics. In order for organic matter to decompose you need: heat, decomposers, and water. However, none of these things have a large effect on the decomposition of plastic. That is why an orange peel can decompose in just 2-4 weeks while it can take 400+ years for a plastic water bottle to decompose! This of course has started many conversations among students about the importance of finding ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle, especially when it comes to materials such as plastics.
