​Sorry that we have been having such short posts for the past few days. Unfortunately I missed some days last week and I was absent this morning due to different meetings and school committments. Fortunately, I do not have anymore meetings scheduled for the next little while, so we will be getting back into our regular routines. 

Some things we have been working on:

Math - We continue to work with whole numbers to the millions place. Now we are practicing using the standard and expanded form as well as representing numbers in pictures and in words. 

Language Arts - We took some time this week to read, "Shi-shi-etko" by Nicola I. Campbell. This story is about a small girl who is preparing to leave her family to attend a residential school. The students and I will continue to discuss some of the impacts of residential schools throughout the remainder of the week, as well as review the topic during our History lessons in Social Studies throughout the year. 

Science - In Science we have finished looking at Classroom Temperature. Now we are going to be turning our attention to how air moves in outdoor environments. What causes the wind? How does this impact weather systems?

Social Studies - We continue to review the provinces, territories, and capitals of Canada. We will also begin looking at other mapping concepts (ie. legends, compasses, scale, cardinal directions, etc.) before beginning our study of the Regions of Canada.

French - We continue to review our numbers from 0-31. Next week we will be moving forward and begin reviewing numbers from 32-69.

Phys. Ed. - We are enjoying our ongoing Dance Play residency this week. We have three more sessions, one each day until Friday. 

Health - We continue to review and learn more about the 7 Habits. 

Today the students and I also discussed the achievement indicators that we will be using in our classroom and on the report cards. Students achieve an indicator or either 1, 2, 3, or 4. These indicators are not based on "marks" or "averages," but on the student's level of performance or mastery of curricular outcomes. Today we used the following graphic to help us to better understand these indicators:

Most importantly, the students should understand that with concentration, studying, practice, etc. they can improve and work towards reaching the Jedi Knight (Indicator - 3) or Jedi Master (Indicator - 4) level. Here is a brief description of how teachers assign achievement indicators:

Does not meet grade level expectations.

Student shows basic understanding and is starting to apply the learning.
Is approaching grade level expectations.

Student shows sufficient understanding and generally applies the learning.
Meets grade level expectations.

Please take time to review the Social Studies quizzes sent home today. Students were assessed using the above achievement indicators. Remember, students will be writing another test on the provinces, territories, and capitals tomorrow, allowing students the opportunity to further study and practice.
