Today was: Day 2
Tomorrow is: Day 3

In Math today the Grade 5 students continued to explore the language of probability such as certain, probable, improbable, etc. We also discussed misconceptions surrounding probability. For example, if you flip a two-sided tile that has one blue side and one yellow side, each time you flip the tile there is a 50-50 chance you will flip blue or yellow. Each flip is a separate event. This is why when individuals start to think, "I keep flipping blue, blue must be lucky" or "The next one has to be yellow because I have been flipping so many blues" they are incorrect. Each event is separate. The chances are always equally likely for either colour. We will be conducting some of our own experiments in upcoming classes. The Grade 4 students are continuing to look at displaying data. Currently, they are practicing creating their own bar graphs. We are working on including: titles, labelled y-axis, labelled x-axis, well chosen scale, etc. We will continue to work on bar graphs in upcoming classes.

We also had the opportunity to take part in a "Shake the Break" session with DancePL3Y today. Grades 3-6 students were able to go to the gym and learn some new guided dances with a facilitator. It was a good way to wake us all back up after our Math lessons.

In Social Studies today, students began to explore the four cardinal directions: north, east, south, and west, and how to use them to give descriptions or directions for locations. This involved looking at and reading a variety of maps. I was absent for this lesson today and students worked with a TOC. Some of us struggled a bit and without me there to provide assistance, we will repeat part of this lesson in an upcoming class.

We also had a presentation from Around the World Yo-Yo today. It was interesting to see John perform so many tricks. He really made us laugh. Information on how to buy yo-yos will be going home shortly. This will be a school fundraiser, as some money from each sale will come back to the school. Purchasing yo-yos are of course completely optional.

Finally, we started our first Reading topic today. We are going to be studying Folk Tales throughout the year. Today we began looking at Fairy Tales. You can view more information about both on the "Reading" page where the following notes are shared.

Today we looked specifically at Cinderella. We will actually continue to explore Cinderella in upcoming classes, as it is one of the oldest known Fairy Tales. As such, there are multiple versions across different communities and cultures.
